What is High Definition Laser Scanning?



CabinHigh Definition Laser Scanning
uses either Phase-based or Time-of-Flight technology to measure distance. Using laser scanning, we can efficiently and accurately capture three dimensional data without physically touching the structure or topographical feature. Depending on the settings, the laser scanner collects up to one million data points per second. The individual scans are registered together and unified to create a “project point-cloud’. 

Each individual point in the “Point Cloud” has a Northing (Y), Easting (X), and Elevation (Z) value assigned to it. If the scanner is set to collect color data, there is an RGB (Red, Green, Blue) value assigned to each point as well. The resulting data-set represents an extremely precise three dimensional digital record of existing structures and features. With this data-set, point-to-point measurements can precisely determine the geometry of the structure or feature; this data-set can then be used to create 3D computer models. 

Planning

For Civil Engineers: Utilize our 3D Laser Scanning service to obtain large amounts of highly accurate 3D data quickly and safely. High Definition Laser Scanning is a cost-effective way to collect dimensional data on existing structures. As opposed to measuring with a digital or analog measuring tape, the human error factor is virtually eliminated.  Our laser scanning equipment is capable of recording up to 1M accurate and dependable measurements per second.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) – Architects or building owners can develop 3D smart models to complement facility management (FM) software. 

Maintenance managers can monitor movement and deformation of bridges, buildings, equipment and other structures by performing follow-up scans and comparing datasets.

Historical Preservation

Laser scanning is noninvasive. Scanning and documenting historical buildings creates a permanent current-state record. If the structure is ever damaged, a contractor can use the dataset to accurately restore the structure; if the structure is lost completely, it can be viewed, modeled and remembered as it once existed. Historical buildings are by nature fragile and typically irreplaceable; laser scanning produces no wear and tear on already fragile and irreplaceable structures.
